Best & worst TV cables. TV wiring information & tips

 HOME

What is the best wire or cable to hook up my TV?

From best connectivity solutions on top to the worst at the bottom.

Analog video cables should be as short as possible. Video signal degrades over the long distance. Short cables maximize analog signal and picture quality

Purchase the highest-quality video cables you can afford. It's not a real saving if you paid $20 less for the wires and lost 10% of the TV picture quality

Digital cables are less length sensitive. Digital signal does not deteriorate over a few meter distance

All cables should be physically long enough for wiring of your particular Video-Audio equipment configuration

Digital

Just one single 1394 or HDMI cable is required to hook up your TV!

Digital Audio and Digital Video cables are the best:

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) Connector.  BluRay or 1080p format (not 1080i). Best connection!
Better than DVI, HDMI provide one-cable digital Audio and Video connection with significantly greater bandwidth than DVI
Transmits higher-definition uncompressed digital video. It's a base for transferring current and future display formats
Plus, HDMI Connector is smaller than DVI

All HDMI connections incorporate HDCP protocol (see below), for passing copy-protected digital broadcast content
HDMI is compatible with DVI via an adapter. However, you'll need to establish a separate audio connection when converting from either connection to the other
1080i is the previous format of HDMI connectivity. Great quality, yet it is inferior & might not be compatible with next generation TVs and video equipment

1394 Connection (or IEEE-1394, or FireWire, or iLink). Best connection!
IEEE-1394 is a standard for the exchange of information between PCs and consumer electronic devices

Some high-end TVs include IEEE-1394 connector as an all-purpose digital Audio and Video connector
It enables coordination of multiple A/V devices. Scores of compatible devices may be hooked up to a central control unit (and operated using a single remote!) using IEEE-1394

Get a 1394 or 1080p wire and do not read further! The following are old and/or worse

DVI (Digital Visual Interface) Connector
DVI high-bandwidth, digital-to-digital video connection
Better if your equipment has DVI-HDCP or DVI with HDCP capability. HDCP (High Definition Content Protection)
DVI cable has no provision for audio and requires additional connection for audio signal transmission (Two RCA-type audio cables)

   Digital Video:

RGB mostly used for PC to TV connectivity
Many high-end TVs now include RGB connectivity. It integrates PC and home entertainment system via a single common display device. In other words, you can now enjoy the PC using your TV as a monitor. A great feature for computer gamers, PC based presentations, programmable displays, etc.
Does not provide connection for audio signal transmission

   Digital Audio

      Coaxial Digital Audio

Coaxial Digital Audio Connection
Provides for a high quality digital connection between receiver and DVD/CD player. Digital Audio signal is sent electrically to and is processed by the receiver. (this is not Coaxial RF Connection described below)
      Optical Digital Audio

Optical Digital Audio Connection
Quality is the same as above but the digital signal is sent in the form of light and is therefore immune to EM and RF interference

Analog

   Analog Video:

Component Video Connection (Three RCA-type wires/connectors: Green, Blue, & Red )
Older and inferior to the above digital connections. Yet still better than S-video and composite video wires below providing improved picture quality. Widely used to wire DVD player to a TV set

S-Video Connection
S-video connection delivers better picture quality than a composite video connection
Composite Video Connection
Video connectivity via a single RCA-type yellow wire/connector. Avoid!

  Analog Audio

5.1-Channel Audio Connection (analog)
Not used to connect to a TV
A high quality analog audio connection. It sends processed audio signals via 6 RCA-type wires/connectors. Connects SACD, DVD-Audio or DVD player to a home theater receiver (with 5.1-channel inputs)

Stereo Audio Connection
Two RCA-type component audio cables (White & Red) transmit stereo analog audio signal from VCR, CD/DVD player to a TV or home theater receiver
Coaxial RF Audio and Video Connection:
Coaxial RF cable connects your cable box, digital satellite box, or VCR to your TV. Worst connection of all. Avoid!
